Infertility Evaluation

An infertility evaluation looks at both partners to understand why pregnancy may not be happening and what options may help.

Understanding Infertility Evaluation

Conception depends on ovulation, open fallopian tubes, a healthy uterus and adequate sperm. The evaluation checks each of these step by step.

Tests are individualised — not everyone needs every test — and results guide a discussion of options from lifestyle advice to IUI or IVF.

Who may need this?

It may be considered in situations such as the following. Suitability is always decided after individual assessment.

  • Couples trying for 12 months without pregnancy (or 6 months if the woman is over 35).
  • Those with irregular periods, known conditions or previous pelvic surgery.
  • Men with known concerns about sperm or reproductive health.

How does it work?

  1. 01

    Consultation

    Detailed history for both partners.

  2. 02

    Female tests

Hormone tests, ultrasound and assessment of ovarian reserve.

  3. 03

    Tubal assessment

A test such as HSG to check the tubes, when appropriate.

  4. 04

    Semen analysis

Assessment of sperm count, movement and shape.

  5. 05

    Plan

Discussion of findings and next steps.

Potential benefits

  • Identifies treatable causes.
  • Helps choose the most appropriate treatment.

Important considerations

  • Sometimes no clear cause is found (unexplained infertility).
  • Tests may need specific cycle timing.
  • Evaluation does not guarantee a particular outcome.

Preparation

  • Bring all previous test and treatment records for both partners.
  • Note your cycle dates.
