IVF

In Vitro Fertilisation

In vitro fertilisation brings eggs and sperm together in a laboratory, allowing embryos to develop before one is transferred to the uterus.

Understanding IVF

IVF involves several coordinated stages. Medicines encourage the ovaries to develop multiple eggs, which are collected in a short procedure and combined with sperm in the laboratory.

Fertilised eggs are observed as they develop into embryos over a few days. A selected embryo is placed into the uterus, and suitable additional embryos may be frozen for future use.

Who may need this?

It may be considered in situations such as the following. Suitability is always decided after individual assessment.

  • People with blocked or damaged fallopian tubes.
  • Couples with significant male factor infertility (often with ICSI).
  • People with endometriosis, reduced ovarian reserve or ovulation disorders.
  • Couples with unexplained infertility after simpler treatments have not been successful.

How does it work?

  1. 01

    Ovarian stimulation

Hormone injections, usually over around 8–12 days, encourage several follicles to grow, with scans and blood tests to monitor response.

  2. 02

    Trigger injection

A final injection matures the eggs and times the collection.

  3. 03

    Egg retrieval

Eggs are collected through the vagina with ultrasound guidance, usually under sedation.

  4. 04

    Fertilisation

Eggs are combined with prepared sperm, or ICSI is used when appropriate.

  5. 05

    Embryo development

Embryos are cultured and observed in the laboratory for several days.

  6. 06

    Embryo transfer

A selected embryo is placed in the uterus with a thin catheter; a pregnancy test follows about two weeks later.

Potential benefits

  • Bypasses tubal problems.
  • Allows assessment of fertilisation and embryo development.
  • Suitable additional embryos may be frozen for later use.

Important considerations

  • IVF cannot guarantee pregnancy; outcomes depend strongly on age, egg and sperm factors and individual health.
  • Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) is an uncommon but important risk, which monitoring aims to reduce.
  • Egg retrieval carries small risks such as bleeding or infection.
  • Treatment can be emotionally and financially demanding; take time to ask questions.

Preparation and recovery

  • Baseline tests for both partners are usually arranged before starting.
  • Learn how and when to take injections; keep a medicine schedule.
  • Arrange an escort on the day of egg retrieval if sedation is used.

After the procedure

  • Mild bloating and cramping are common for a few days after egg retrieval.
  • Most people resume light activities the next day.
  • Contact the clinic promptly for severe abdominal pain, breathlessness or marked swelling.
